The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has updated its rules on safety certifications for imported consumer products. To meet new Certificate of Compliance (CoC) requirements, importers will have to electronically file safety information about their products.<\/span><\/p>\n

It used to be that companies just had to keep safety certificates for their products. But now, as soon as their products arrive at the border, they’ll have to upload this info directly into the CPSC’s eFiling system.<\/span><\/p>\n

CPSC says requirements <\/span>will affect most <\/b>children\u2019s product imports<\/b><\/a> and domestic children\u2019s products 18 months after the final rule is published<\/b> in the Federal Register. All consumer products imported into a U.S. foreign trade zone and subsequently used or stored<\/span> will have a 24 month effective date.<\/b><\/p>\n

Importers will need to provide the following data for each product:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. What the finished product is.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Who certifies the product is safe.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. What safety rules the product complies with.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. When and where it was made.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. When and where the product was last tested for compliance.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Details about the person keeping the test records.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The updates mean that importers need to adjust their systems to handle the <\/span>eFiling requirement<\/b> for their CoC and make sure their processes align with the CPSC\u2019s standards.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The CPSC is also inviting up to <\/span>2,000 importers<\/b> to test the system during a voluntary stage. This is a great opportunity for companies to get familiar with eFiling before it becomes mandatory.
