EU Approves Increased Formaldehyde Limit in Toy Safety

On November 20, 2019, the European Commission issued the Directive (EU) 2019/1929, amending Appendix C of Annex II of the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, toys for children under 36 months or other toys intended to be placed in the mouth. Formaldehyde uses specific limits. Member States shall implement this provision from May 21, 2021. The measures provided for in this Directive are in accordance with the opinion of the Toy Safety Committee established under Article 47 of Directive 2009/48/EC. According to the Directive, the formaldehyde (CAS No.: 50-00-0) limit is added to Appendix C of Annex II of the Toy Safety Directive, which specifies the harmful chemicals in toys used by children under 36 months or other toys intended to be placed in the mouth. The formaldehyde limits are as follows:
