American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) published in March 2020 the standard ASTM F2923-20, Consumer Safety Specification for Children Jewelry, prepared by its Committee (F15) on Consumer Products, Subcommittee (F15.24) on Jewelry.
Compared to its previous version ASTM F2923-14, the main changes are as below:
1. Physical requirements remain unchanged.
2. Update total cadmium content requirement from 300 ppm to 75ppm.
3. Add phthalate requirement for plasticized accessible components of children’s jewelry: shall not contain more than 0.1 percent (1000 ppm) of the following phthalates:
(1).Di-(2-ethyhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
(2).Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
(3).Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP)
(4).Diisononyl phthalate (DINP)
(5).Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
(6).Di-n-pentyl phthalate (DPENP)
(7).Di-n-hexyl phthalate (DHEXP)
(8).Dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP)
4. Related chemical test methods changed to updated version:
(1). Update method ASTM F963-11 to ASTM F963 (Current latest version: ASTM F963-17).
(2). Add method CPSC-CH-E1001-08.3 besides previous CPSC-CH-E1001-08.
(3). Add method CPSC-CH-E1002-08.3 besides previous CPSC-CH-E1002-08.
(4). Update method EN 1811:2011 to EN 1811:2011+A1:2015.
5. Not allow to use alternative chemical test method not stated in standard.
