The European Union Imposes New Restrictions on Formaldehyde

In a significant regulatory development, the European Union (EU) published Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 on July 17, 2023, to amend Annex XVII to the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. This move further tightens control over the use of Formaldehyde and substances that release Formaldehyde.

 

Formaldehyde and Applications in the EU

Formaldehyde is a colorless and highly toxic gas that is used in a range of applications. 98% of the Formaldehyde manufactured or imported in the Union used in the production of formaldehyde-based resins. These resins are central to the creation of various wood-based products such as furniture and flooring, wallpapers, foams, and more.

Despite its widespread use. The gas is highly reactive in nature at ambient temperatures and can pose serious health risks, such as irritation to the skin, throat, lungs, and eyes.

New EU Formaldehyde Restrictions: Implementation Phases

The newly implemented changes will place additional restrictions on Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Releasers, with the measures to be phased in starting from August 6, 2026.

Item Requirement
Wood-based and furniture articles. ≤ 0.062 mg/m3
Articles other than furniture and wood-based articles. ≤ 0.080 mg/m3
Road vehicles (in the interior). ≤ 0.062 mg/m3
